German-based Flachglas“s upward trend is continuing. The first half of the financial year running to 31 March 1996 saw group pre-tax profits rise by 59% to DM 46.9 million. A further improvement is expected in the second half. Flachglas, which is part of the British Pilkington group via Dahlbusch Verwaltungs, said rationalisation measures which had been carried out up to the end of March 1995 had a positive effect on earnings. Group turnover fell by 2.2% to DM 852.6 million in the first half. This was mainly attributable to a 6.2% drop in turnover from vehicle glass to DM 155 million. Turnover from industrial glass also declined, down 14.8% at DM 78.7 million. Modest growth of 0.8% to DM 618.6 million was recorded in construction glass. Investment amounted to DM 31.4 million in the first half. The number of employees was down 5.6% at 8,649 at the end of September 1995.
