EDP, European leader in distributed solar energy, through EDP Energia Italia, has extended its partnership with Verallia Italia, a company producing glass packaging for beverages and food products.
In 2022, both companies signed a contract under which EDP installed solar panels in five of Verallia’s plants in Italy with a total installed capacity of 15 MWp, becoming the largest deal in distributed generation that EDP signed in Italy and one of the largest of the company in Europe. Now, EDP and Verallia have agreed to install 1 MWp in addition to this contract.
With this new installation, expected to become operational in 2026, EDP’s assets will now produce an annual generation of 17 GWh within Verallia’s plants, which will avoid close to 8,500 tonnes of CO2 yearly.
This new solar plant will be installed in Pescia (Pistoia), in the region of Tuscany. Extending the scope of the contract to a new region highlights EDP’s commitment to its clients and the quality of the solutions the company delivers. Additionally, this choice confirms Verallia’s bet on a more sustainable future and its trust in EDP as an energy partner to follow its sustainable roadmap toward its goal of reducing its emissions (Scopes 1&2) in 46,2 percent by 2030.
“With this new agreement, EDP renews its collaboration with a strategic partner like Verallia, whose efforts to reimagine glass production increasingly sustainable is a concrete example of industrial transition. In a nation traditionally reliant on conventional energy sources, this project represents another important step in showing that renewable solutions are both feasible and scalable. At EDP, we’re proud to support Verallia’s and contribute to Italy’s path toward full decarbonisation,” said Antonio Ricciardi, Head of Client Solutions business in Europe at EDP.
“Our partnership with EDP is a key driver for Verallia in implementing the Group’s CSR strategy,” added Massimo Barzaglia, Purchasing Director Verallia Italy. “Through the signed agreement for the installation of photovoltaic panels, we are taking a decisive step toward reducing our carbon footprint and promoting renewable energy. Together, we are building a more sustainable future for our industry and our stakeholders.”
At the Pescia plant, Verallia is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability. With the new furnace, operational since 2025 and equipped with innovative HeatOx technology, the site has transitioned from traditional combustion to optimized oxy-combustion. This upgrade enables a reduction in fossil fuel consumption of up to 12 percent and lowers CO2 emissions by approximately 7,800 tonnes annually. Furthermore, the installation of photovoltaic panels supports the plant’s contribution to advancing the Group’s CSR Roadmap.
As part of this ongoing partnership between EDP and Verallia, in March 2025 Verallia Italy honoured EDP with the prestigious CSR Supplier Award, a recognition granted to partner companies that have stood out for their positive impact on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and their commitment to social, environmental and ethical practices.
