Decarbonisation in the Glass Industry: A defining Vitrum Conference

With the glass industry at a critical juncture in its decarbonisation journey, nowhere will this be more evident than at Vitrum 2025, where the conference, “Decarbonisation in the Glass Industry,” organised by GlassOnLine, is due to take place on Wednesday, September 17, from 09:30 to 16:30 in Conference Hall 9.

Against the backdrop of current and ongoing industry commitments to EU climate legislation, the event will bring together key stakeholders – all to address today’s urgent demands to continually transform glass making processes. Indeed, with the European Climate Law mandating a 55 percent cut to emissions by 2030 as well as full net-zero by 2050 and a proposed 90 percent target for 2040 under review, the pace of industrial adaptation is now pressured to accelerate as never before.

Leading voices from the industry, including Vitrum President Dino Zandonella Necca, GIMAV General Director Lucia Masutti, will all share insights on everything from low-carbon furnace technologies to energy switching to carbon capture and supply chain reconfiguration. Co-chaired by Senior Editor Nick Fouché of Glass-Technology International and Glass Machinery Plants & Accessories, the two leading industry magazines hosting the event, and Assovetro General Director Walter Da Riz, the conference will further explore how today’s evolving regulatory demands—underpinned by the Fit-for-55 package and the newly enacted Net-Zero Industry Act—affect production, investment and innovation in both flat and hollow glass manufacturing.

At such a crucial time when decarbonisation is beyond anything approximating an option, this conference will be offering critical guidance and collaboration opportunities – not only in decoding policy but also for illuminating viable industrial pathways from electrification to hydrogen use.

This is why the conference isn’t just any global glass sector event. Instead, it’s a strategic inflection point, none of which is surprising when we consider that Vitrum 2025 is where the very future of glass—and its place in a climate-neutral Europe—will be dramatically reimagined.

The conference is promoted by GlassOnLine, Glass Machinery Plants & Accessories and Glass-Technology International.
