The German Continental group has begun production of PET pre-forms for beverage bottles at the Continental PET India plant at Alandi near Pune. Although only one moulding machine has been installed so far, there is space for five more and for further expansion of the site. Total investment by the German group so far has been DM 8 million (US$ 5.2 million). India currently uses 1.2 billion litres/year of bottle capacity for soft drinks and mineral water, and demand is forecast to rise sharply. Pre-forms produced at the Pune plant will also be exported to other Asian markets. Continental PET is also setting up production in the Philippines.
