19 March 1998: Avery Dennison Corp. of the United States said it plans to appoint President and Chief Operating Officer Philip Neal as its chief executive effective 1 May. The company said in a press release that Chairman and CEO Charles Miller had agreed to remain chairman for at least two years after renouncing the CEO title to Neal. Miller will have active management responsibilities for acquisitions, leadership development and key civic and community relations, among other activities, said the company. Neal joined Avery Dennison in 1974 as controller and was appointed president and COO in 1990. Based in Pasadena, California, Avery Dennison makes products for consumer and industrial markets, including Avery-brand office automation products, Fasson-brand self-adhesive materials, peel-and-stick postage stamps, on-battery tester labels, automated retail tag and labeling systems, and specialty tapes and chemicals.
