It has been announced that Japanese Asahi Glass Co. is to set up a company in Indonesia to produce parts for cathode-ray tubes with LGEDI (P.T. LG Electronics Display Devices Indonesia) which is owned by LG Electronics Inc. of South Korea. The venture will be capitalized at US$ 40 million, with Asahi owning 54% and LG taking 36%. 5% each will be bought by two local firms. The US$ 300 million unit will initially assemble 10 million coloured glass funnels a year starting in the autumn of 1997. In the future, the company plans to produce 8 million colour panels annually. Half the products will be supplied to local CRT makers, and the remainder will be shipped to other Southeast Asian countries. South Korean and Japanese firms, including LG Electronics and Toshiba Corp., started making CRTs in Indonesia in early 1996. TV-tube production in the nation is likely to reach 5 million units in 1997.
