American Soda, LLP, a subsidiary of Solvay America Inc., announced 1 April 2004 that solution mining activities at its Piceance Creek, Colorado, nahcolite mine will be suspended and the facilities mothballed. Soda ash production at the Parachute, Colorado, site will also be mothballed due to continued high energy costs and continued losses at the operation. The company“s soda ash customers will be supplied from Solvay Chemicals Inc.“s Green River, Wyoming, facility. “The sodium bicarbonate plant will switch to feedstock from Solvay Chemicals“ low cost soda ash produced near Green River, Wyoming,” noted Dick Hogan, Sr. Vice President of Solvay Chemicals. “We believe the sodium bicarbonate business is a valuable asset in the purchase of American Soda and the customer response to the mix of Solvay Chemicals products has been very positive. Our order systems will be converted to Solvay Chemicals in the next few months.” American Soda, LLP is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Solvay America Inc., the U.S. holding company for most of the North American subsidiaries of the worldwide Solvay chemical and pharmaceutical group. The Solvay Group, whose companies employ more than 30,000 people in 50 countries, recorded consolidated sales for 2003 of EUR 7.6 billion, generated by activities in its four business sectors: Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Plastics and Processing.
