To materialize, the Renovation Wave needs to be backed by an ambitious revision of both the Energy Efficiency Directive and the Energy Performance of Building Directive. This is the message that the European flat glass and window industries represented by Glass for Europe, EuroWindoor, ARGE, European Aluminium, EPPA and ES-SO, want to send to EU legislators currently redesigning both the EED and EPBD.
The window sector supports the goal of reducing GHG emissions by 55 percent but recommends the introduction of an indicative sector-specific sub-target for buildings to ensure that building renovation finally takes off. In this context, public authorities have a major role to play and should lead by example by investing in the renovation of all governmental and public buildings.
Windows and glazed areas are essential to the energy performance of buildings but also ensure the comfort and well-being of people living and working in these buildings. Glass is critical to provide daylight and enable views of the outside world. In line with the new European Bauhaus initiative, Glass for Europe believes that aspects such as access to external view and sufficient natural daylight should be considered while designing energy renovation policies.
