It has been announced that PPG Industries, of the US plans to concentrate on its development in Europe, and the glass fibre sector in particular. The Pittsburgh-based company reported a 20% rise in its glass fibre sales in 1995. It is the world leader for glass fibre used in textiles and is number two for glass reinforcement applications. The market for the latter offers strong growth potential with 5% annual production growth expected to 1.9 million tonnes in 2000. The Pacific Asian market is likely to grow by 9% per year. The opening of its new plant at Chester, South Carolina, US, will boost its North American production. PPG“s joint venture at Chia Yi, Taiwan is to open a second furnace in 1997. The US group had a first quarter 1996 net result of US$ 172.3 million (down 21% from 1995) on a turnover of US$ 1.75 billion (US$ 1.74 billion for the first quarter of 1995).
