It has been announced that US-based Solvay Soda Ash will expand its mining exploitation operations and increase its production capacity for sodium carbonate to 3.2 million tons per year. As a result, Solvay will be able to meet world-wide demand for this product and to satisfy Asahi Glass“s sodium carbonate requirement for its flat glass production. The joint venture“s capacity was increased by 15% in January. In addition, Solvay Soda Ash“s parent company, the Solvay Group of Belgium, the world market leader of soda ash, barium and strontium carbonates, and decorative self-adhesives, reported net earnings of BFr 12.5 billion in 1995 against BFr 8 billion in 1994 (an increase of 57%). Consolidated sales reached BFr 273 billion in 1995, up 4% from 1994, despite the cessation or sale of certain activities. In 1995, the Group made 67% of its sales outside Europe.
