The Italian authorities are trying to persuade Philips Electronics NV of the Netherlands to reconsider the planned mid-1997 closure of its 1,000-employee video and television manufacturing plant near Milan, in northern Italy. Italy“s Industry Ministry says that in a meeting with officials of Philips Italia and trade union leaders it had asked Philips to present alternatives to closure and to delay the plan so that ways of safeguarding jobs could be found. An Industry Ministry statement said that Italy would be contacting the Dutch government over the company“s decision to close the Italian plant.
