Japan“s Asahi Glass is boosting its semi-conductor operations. With an investment of several hundred million yen, the company has established a design centre for semi-conductors, and the company has concluded a domestic sales representative agreement with South Korea“s Hyundai Electronics, which will result in the introduction to the Japanese market of such Hyundai products as its AS integrated circuit. Asahi Glass will position its electronics-related business as the core of its next-generation operations. As one aspect of strengthening semi-conductors, the company plans to double annual sales in the year 2000, to about Yen 50.0 billion. Asahi Glass started trading semi-conductors about 30 years ago. Its semiconductor operations division had signed representative agreements with four companies for sales of DRAM and ASIC, and also sells liquid crystal displays produced by one of its subsidiaries.
