Belgian chemicals group Solvay has resumed operations at its site at Bernburg in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. This had been its biggest soda ash plant pre-1993, when the company began modernising the facility in a programme costing some DM 200 million. As well as increasing soda ash capacity to 540,000 tonnes/year by building a new 300,000 tonnes/year unit using the latest technology, the programme included a new gas turbine cogeneration unit supplying electricity and steam, and a completely new 50,000 tonnes/year hydrogen peroxide unit, which was opened in 1995, replacing older capacity in Germany and France.
