Last week, Gwalia Consolidated Ltd. of Australia said that it has decided to put its Lithium Carbonate Plant at the Greenbushes Mine on care and maintenance. The decision will be reviewed from time to time dependent upon future prices for lithium carbonate. Increased global supplies of lithium carbonate from new sources, some at significantly low prices, has reduced the price and market for the company“s lithium carbonate. The company“s Lithium Minerals (spodumene) business is on-going and is continuing to produce at budgeted levels. Besides, the Tantalite operations at the Greenbushes and Wodgina Mines are operating at optimum levels with all production for the next five years already sold under long-term contracts.
