22 October 1998: US-based manufacturer of optical fibre, cable and components, high-performance glass and other materials, Corning Inc., said it has filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Transitions Optical Inc. of Pinellas Park, Florida, for engaging in anti-competitive practices to prevent Corning from introducing a new plastic photochromic eyeglass product. Corning also alleges that Transitions threatened to cut off supply of its products to leading lens manufacturers who take on Corning“s new plastic photochromic product, the company said in a statement. Corning is seeking a preliminary injunction against Transitions“ anti-competitive practices in the US District Court in Rochester, New York. The company hopes to launch its photochromic eyeglass lenses in the US in the first half of 1999. Photochromic lenses behave as a clear lens indoors and as a sunglass lens outdoors.
