Hundreds of jobs under threat at a Doncaster (UK) glassmaking factory have been saved following a takeover by an American company. Earlier this year, it was feared up to 1,200 jobs could be lost after the receivers were called in by the directors of Dema, which has factories in Harworth, near Doncaster, and in Chesterfield. But now the Harworth plant, which employs 330 staff, has been sold to the US Corporation Sylvania Lighting International as a going concern, and, according to a report, all jobs are safe. The new owners have promised a programme of investment and upgrading which they hope will put the company back at the top of its field. But the buyout does not include the Chesterfield division, leaving the future of hundreds of jobs there still in doubt.
