FiberCore Inc of Jena in eastern Germany, a manufacturer of singlemode, multimode and specialty optical fibres and preforms for telecomms and data comms, announced 11 June 2003 that FiberCore Glas GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of FiberCore Jena AG, has begun delivery of its first specialty glass order using Plasma Outside Vapour Deposition (POVD) technology. In April 2003 FiberCore received its second patent from the USPTO for POVD, a technology that the company claims can lower the cost of manufacturing part or all of an optical fiber preform. FiberCore quoted Charles De Luca, MD of FiberCore Jena AG, as saying that while the size of the order is “not material”, the placement of the order validates the process and the technology, and FiberCore expects further orders from this customer and others for fiber optic and other applications. Specialty doped glass products are used in various sectors including semiconductors, lens designs, laser power delivery systems, and scientific and medical applications. Company president and CEO Dr. Aslami said that once the process is fully implemented, it will make a significant contribution to FiberCore“s cost reduction plan. He added that recent industry announcements regarding the use of optical fiber in the deployment of FTT-Premise should once again increase demand for various types of fibres that could be manufactured using POVD process technology.
