A former Thomson worker was released without charge on 4 April 2004, 2 days after being arrested in connection with the 16 March 2004 blaze at the company“s TV tube plant in Marion, Indiana. The fire occurred the same day Thomson announced the closure of the Marion plant. Jose Garcia was freed from Grant County Jail thanks to a U.S. Supreme Court decision requiring that anyone arrested must be released within 48 hours if a judge has not found probable cause, Grant County Prosecutor James Luttrell said. Garcia was arrested 2 April 2004 by Indiana State Fire Marshal Investigator Timothy Murray on a Class A felony count of arson. Murray made the arrest without a warrant before the prosecutor“s office reviewed the case, Luttrell said in a statement. Prosecutors typically review a case and a judge issues an arrest warrant, Luttrell said. Garcia“s release will not affect the continuing investigation into the fire that caused damage put at USD 750,000.
