Schott Lithotec USA Corp. is upgrading and expanding its plant at Poughkeepsie, New York, and is planning to increase its workforce. Schott Lithotec makes and distributes photomask blanks for use in the semiconductor industry. The company bought the Poughkeepsie plant from DuPont Photomasks Inc. in a USD 42 million deal in April 2002. Schott Lithotec“s improvements to its 3160 m sq facility include upgrading its boiler, enhancements to its mechanical systems, and building a 280 m sq Class 10 clean room. The clean room is nearly completed and is being built within the existing facility, said Gary Schlegel, vice president of finance and administration. Eighty people work at the plant but this number is planned to increase by 35 over the next three years, according to Schlegel. Schott Lithotec received an incentive offer from Empire State Development which will help pay for part of the costs of the improvements, making it eligible to apply for a USD 300,000 capital grant. “Most (grants) are on a reimbursement basis,” ESD spokesman Chapin Fay said. “They still have to go through the application process.” The expansion has been in the planning stages for some time. “We have been working with Schott on their expansion for at least two and a half years,” said Dutchess County Economic Development Corp.“s CEO and President Ronald W. Coan.
