Glass recycling in Spain as a whole increased by 6.9% between January and June 2004, with 222,027 tonnes of containers deposited in collection bins, according to data from Ecovidrio, the non-profit organisation responsible for managing the collection of glass packaging waste in the country. According to the association, the rise is due to the installation of 8,666 new bins in 2003, as well as the effort applied to waste collection management, constant improvements to infrastructure and the desire of the community to improve the environment. Only two out of Spain“s eighteen autonomous communities recorded a fall in recycling: Andalucia (south Spain), down 3.2%, and the tiny Spanish enclave of Ceuta y Melilla in North Africa. All other communities recorded increases, the largest being Castilla-La Mancha (17.6%), Galicia (14.7%) and Asturias (14.1%).
