US baby food manufacturer Gerber has introduced plastic containers and customer demand for the new packaging is outstripping supply, according to a report in the Salt Lake Tribune. Retailers have put up notices informing consumers that the shortages are likely to continue through July 2005 although Gerber baby foods continue to be available in glass jars. Company spokesman David Mortazavi said the introduction of plastic containers is based on consumer research which showed that, while parents were happy with glass, they were ready to give plastic a try. Eventually, most of the company“s baby food products will be switched to recyclable plastic. US parents, it seems, are attracted by the convenience of the cube-shaped plastic containers, which are said to be easier to carry when on the move and to stack safely in the kitchen cupboard. One customer noted that if dropped “there“s not glass everywhere”, while appreciating the reusability of the plastic lids and containers.
