Solvay Sodi has equipped its heavy and calcinated soda plant in Devnya, North-eastern Bulgaria with a new 160-meter distiller claimed to be the world“s largest, it was reported on 4 November 2005. The BGL 10.5 million distiller will cut steam and ammonia consumption by 20% and will improve environmental and business performance. Solvay Sodi plans to invest BGL 15 million in upgrading its facilities in 2005. The company has already spent over USD 20 million on production quality and new technologies. Some USD 5 million have been put into ensuring the environmental protection of the Varna lake into which wastewater is discharged. Currently, the Devnya plant makes 900,000 to one million tonnes of soda ash per annum. The Devnya plant was privatised in 1997. At present 98% of its capital is held by Solvay Sisecam Holding, whose main shareholders are Belgian group Solvay, the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, and Turkish glass company Sisecam. Some 6,000 minority shareholders hold the remaining 2%.
