Caithness Glass is to shut down its base in Perth, Scotland. The visitor centre and glass blowing factory, which employs about 60 people, will close in January 2008 and the operation will be moved to a new site at Crieff in Perthshire. Caithness Glass was bought by Devon, England-based Dartington Crystal in October 2006 for an undisclosed sum. John Morris, managing director of Dartington Crystal, said the Scottish firm would continue trading until January 2008. “As a result of the impact of development work which has been ongoing since April this year and the subsequent effect on profitability, as well as the failure to agree on suitable terms to facilitate a move into a new visitor centre, the board at Dartington Crystal has decided to close its Caithness Glass Perth visitor centre and factory.” Perth MSP Roseanna Cunningham said it was “very sad”, while MP PeterWishart said he was “bitterly disappointed”.
