Residential window and door manufacturer Pella Corp. said 29 January 2008 it plans to lay off 14 more seasonal workers in February, citing the continuing downturn in the housing market. The company announced earlier in January 2008 that it planned to close its Story City, Iowa factory in March, leaving 244 workers without jobs. It also announced lay-offs for 40 seasonal workers in Pella, Iowa, the company“s headquarters. The new round of layoffs will take place 11 February 2008 at the Pella factory, which will employ about 3,600 after the layoffs. “All sectors of the housing economy from lenders to realtors to builders, suppliers and manufacturers are experiencing the impact of the declining housing economy”, said spokeswoman Kathy Krafka Harkema. Pella Corp. manufacturers and markets wood, fiberglass and vinyl windows and doors. The company also has factories in Sioux Center, Carroll and Shenandoah in Iowa. After the layoffs, the company will employ about 5,300 people in Iowa and 9,800 nationwide.
