website maker In 1970, SORG patented the revolutionary VSM® vertical glass melting furnace, with its distinctive circular rotating crown. At the time, no one could have predicted the great future that lay ahead for VSM®, but the technology, which helped transform sustainable glass melting, remains unsurpassed to this day.
The figures speak for themselves: since its launch, SORG has delivered over 110 of these furnace systems worldwide, more than 50 since the year 2000 alone.
And the success story continues: in 2025 and into 2026, seven VSM® systems have gone into operation, or are about to be commissioned, across three continents. These VSM®systems cover a range of tonnage from 50 to 200 tpd and produce a wide range of products: from container glass, flaconnage and electric insulators, to insulation fibres, microfibres and sodium silicate.
SORG Managing Partner Michael Sorg is confident about VSM®‘s relevance for the future of glass making, “These figures and the range of applications prove, thanks in part to the ongoing development of the technology, that the fully electric VSM® is more than just revolutionary sustainable technology, it’s evolutionary as well.”
With the challenges facing the glass industry, and SORG’s long-established commitment to innovating with purpose, it looks like the VSM® will continue to lead the way and push boundaries in a modern, sustainable industry.
