Less quantity but more quality was the unanimous comment expressed by exhibitors after this year“s Vitrum trade fair. All the prospects and signals of growth during the long months of preparation before the fair seemed to have vanished by the time Vitrum opened to the public on 3 October. A drop in overseas visitors had been feared after the tragic events of 11 September and growing international tension. Despite a slow start, the four pavilions of the fair became crowded with visitors showing serious interest in starting solid negotiations. When the exhibition closed on 6 October, the comments of the 421 exhibitors and the number of visitors during the fair dispelled initial fears. There was actually a 2.50% drop in visitors (16,284 against 16,702 at Vitrum 1999), but this was compensated by the high quality of the contacts made between exhibiting companies and visiting operators. The importance of Vitrum 2001 as a moment of aggregation in the glass sector, machines and products for glass manufacturing, was confirmed by the presence of important people from the glass world during the opening ceremony. Besides the president of Vitrum Dino Fenzi, the fair hosted Adolfo Urso, vice-minister of the Ministry of Industry, Flavio Cattaneo, president of Fiera Milano, Ugo Mam, manager of the Internationalization unit of Confindustria, and Annibale Besana, president of Gimav, the National association of the producers of machines, accessories and special products for glass manufacturing.
