Vitro S.A. de C.V. announced 10 September 2004 that its Mexican subsidiary Industria del Alcali was certified as an “Excellent Environmental” Company by the government“s Federal Environmental Agency at an awards ceremony attended by Mexican President Vicente Fox. Vitro said the certification comes as a result of Alcali“s focus on environmental issues and its commitment to the implementation of voluntary environmental management systems. Vitro CEO Federico Sada personally accepted Alcali“s “Excellent Environmental” Company certification, an award presented by the governmental Office of the Environmental Attorney to organizations with superior performance on environmental issues, including eco-efficiency and systems implementation. “We are proud to receive this certificate, which positions Industria del Alcali and Vitro among Mexico“s leading sustainable-development companies. This award ensures we“ve taken the right steps since 2000, when we first launched Vitro“s Environmental System, a system linked to our AST total quality management model,” said Federico Sada. The award is presented to a special group of organizations that exceed the standards set by the environmental agency“s “Clean Industry” program, which calls on companies to comply with all of the country“s environmental regulations. “Excellent Environmental Company recognition means certified organizations have gone beyond regulatory compliance; they are role models for our country in their leadership and commitment to sustainable development,” said Alberto Cardenas, Secretary of State for Environmental and Natural Resources. To receive “Excellent Environmental” Company certification, organizations must comply with the “Clean Industry” program and applicable environmental regulations, and have in place strong environmental management systems, among other requirements. Industria del Alcali is located in Garcia, a suburb of Monterrey in the state of Nuevo Len. It is the only facility in Mexico to produce sodium carbonate, a key raw material for glass manufacturing. The company also manufactures, sells, and distributes sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and calcium chloride. The Alcali industrial chemical complex manufactures nearly 860,000 tons a year, serves more than 200 clients in Mexico and abroad, and employs approximately 650 people. In addition to the glass industry, Alcali serves the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, petroleum, and water-treatment markets. As well as President Vicente Fox, a number of prominent government officials attended the ceremony, in which 22 companies nationwide were certified. Among those present were Alberto Crdenas, Environment and Natural Resources Secretary, Fernando Elizondo, Energy Secretary, Fernando Canales, Economy Secretary, Jos Natividad Gonzlez Paras, Governor of the State of Nuevo Leon, and Jos Luis Luege, Environment General Attorney, as well as other government and industry leaders.
