The Vietnam Glass and Ceramic Corp. (Viglacera) and the Vietnam Chemical Corp. (Vinachem) have recently signed a memorandum of understanding for a soda ash project. The two corporations will set up a joint stock company, which will invest VND 1.3 trillion (USD 82.3 million) in a soda ash factory with a capacity of 200,000 tons a year. The plant will be located in the Dien Chau District of central Nghe An province, which offers abundant materials for the production of soda. According to Vinachem, Vietnam has to import between 150,000 and 180,000 tons of soda a year. Domestic demand for soda is forecast to reach 300,000 tons by 2010 and 400,000 tons by 2020.
