The Vietnam Glass and Ceramics Corporation (Viglacera) has set a target of more than tripling its export earnings to US$ 17.5 million by 2005, general director Dinh Quang Huy said. The scheme is to deal with difficulties with the export of glassware and ceramics at the moment. The corporation is expected to achieve export earnings of more than US$ 5 million in 2002, up 18% on last year“s figure. “We have opened two branches in Russia and the United States, and these facilities will play a key role in boosting our exports,” Huy said. Viglacera intends to target South and Southeast Asia, parts of the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Northern and Central America, Central and Western Africa, and Australia. Yet, exports to the markets are not easy at all because of high transport costs although they have high demand for glassware and ceramics. “Transport costs account for 40-60% of the prices of our exports and this is the biggest hurdle,” Huy confirmed. Viglacera has to pay US$ 1,800 for a container of tiles bound for the US, while the charge of the same amount from Thailand and China to this market is only US$ 1,200-1,400.
