A plan to disband the Vietnamese state construction glass corporation is before the Prime Minister according to industry officials. The plan also affects two other similare corporations for plastic and leather. “The Vietnam Leather and Footwear Corporation, Vietnam Glass and Ceramics Corporation and Vietnam Plastics Corporation are to be dissolved because they do not meet the criteria to be retained under the State umbrella, and such a move aims to speed up the process of equitizing State-owned enterprises,” said Deputy Minister Bui Xuan Khu. It was not made clear how they failed to meet the criteria. Although an official decision from the Prime Minister has not yet been issued, the plan is in line with Decision 58 of the Prime Minister issued on April 26, 2002. This decision also specifies that only large-scale State companies in the beverage-brewery, paper, textile and garment and printing industries will be retained.
