14 May 1998: Vietnam Glass and Ceramic Corporation is reportedly building an industrial zone, which is to accommodate small and medium-sized factories engaged in processing agricultural products, handicrafts and pharmaceutical products for export as well as electronic installation, following approval from Prime Minister Khai. The Prime Minister recently approved the US$ 52 million plan to construct the 312 hectare Tien Son Industrial Zone (IZ) in the Tien Son district of Bac Ninh province, 17 kilometres from Hanoi and situated along Highway No. 18. An estimated US$ 21 million is expected to be invested over the next seven years to develop the IZ“s infrastructure on 134.7 hectares to attract about 70 factories. Upon completion, the IZ will accommodate 170 factories and enterprises, creating 15,640 direct jobs and attracting 21,600 additional labourers for services. The Prime Minister has also approved the project to develop the Ho Nai IZ in the Thong Nhat district of Dong Nai province The Investment Advisory and Construction Company under the Rubber Corporation is the project“s investor, contributing US$ 14.9 million. Vietnam now has 50 IZs throughout the country with a total area of over 8,250 hectares which have attracted 388 foreign-invested projects.
