According to a recent report, consumption of construction glass is rapidly increasing in the Vietnamese market. Output of construction glass was 3-4 million square metres in 1995, 25 million square metres in 1998 and nearly 30 million square metres in 1999. At present, the country has two glass producers including Dap Cau Glass Company with a capacity of 3.8 million square metres of glass per year and VFG Glass – a joint venture between Viglacera and Nippon Sheet Galls Company, Tomen Company from Japan – with a capacity of 28 million square metres of glass per year. However, domestically made glass accounts for only 30% of the domestic market share whereas Chinese glass holds a 60% market share and glass made in Japan, Belgium and Italy a 10% market share. According to the calculations of experts from the Construction Ministry, Vietnam“s demand for construction glass stands at some 32 million square metres each year, which can be met by Dap Cau Glass and VFG Glass. However, the producers have left the domestic market dominated by foreign glass because their products are not diversified enough.
