Construction of the world“s largest float glass plant will begin in the 3Q of 2006 in the Chu Lai Economic Open Zone in the central Vietnamese province of Quang Nam, it was reported on 24 March 2006. Total investment for the project is not available. An agreement was signed 23 March 2006 in Hanoi by the Vietnam Mine & Minerals Group (Vinacomin), the Industrial Development Joint-Stock Company and the Mine Chemical Industrial One-Member Limited Company to establish the Chu Lai Floating Glass Joint Stock Company with capital contribution proportions of 51%, 46% and 3%, respectively. The plant will use refined sand from Thang Binh Coast in the province. When operational in 2008, the plant, which will cover 70 hectares, is expected to produce 1,000 tons a day for export and domestic consumption. The plant will take full advantage of available sand sources in the central region, which are currently exploited for export only.
