Mr. Paul Fontaine, chairman of the French glass firm Verrerie Cristallerie d“Arques (VCA), has denied rumours of possible job cuts at the company, following the death of its founder, Jacques Durand, reported in the last edition of Glassonline World News. Fontaine says VCA, which employs 11,300 people in Arques, France, grew 4% last year. The company had turnover of FFr 5.5 billion in 1996, plus another FFr 500 million from subsidiaries in Spain and the United States. It is currently committing itself to investments, including FFr 200 million for a new furnace, to be built by 1998. The question of the succession, however, remains open. For the time being, the five Durand children have signed an agreement putting their mother, Odette, at the head of the group.
