Vacuum Glass for Skylights — Part 3: Durability and Design

For skylights and other overhead glazing applications, thermal performance is only one part of the design equation. Glass configuration, structural strength, edge sealing and long-term durability are also important.

Structural strength and wind resistance
LandVac
uses fully tempered glass as part of its vacuum glazing configurations.

A specific LandVac configuration has achieved wind-pressure resistance of up to 7200 Pa in ATI testing. Actual design loads depend on the glass configuration, dimensions, support conditions and project-specific requirements.

This distinction is important because the structural performance of any glazing system depends on its complete configuration rather than on a single glass property.

Flexible titanium edge sealing
The integrity of the vacuum cavity depends on the performance of the edge-sealing system.

LandVac’s flexible titanium metal edge-sealing technology is designed to accommodate thermal and mechanical stresses while maintaining the integrity of the vacuum cavity.

The approach is intended to support long-term vacuum retention while allowing the glazing to respond to changes in temperature and mechanical conditions.

Durability testing
LandVac Titanium Vacuum Glass has undergone 22,500 hours of accelerated ageing testing, providing supporting evidence of durability and performance stability under the specified test conditions.

Accelerated ageing results should be considered together with the relevant test methodology and environmental conditions rather than being interpreted directly as an equivalent service-life period.

Design applications
With its slim profile, high thermal insulation performance, structural strength and adaptability to different climatic conditions, vacuum glazing can be considered for skylights and other overhead glazing applications.

Potential applications include hotel atriums, hospital waiting areas, commercial complexes, museums, cultural venues, luxury residences and other large-span or high-ceiling spaces.

For these projects, glazing design needs to consider thermal performance, solar exposure, condensation risk, safety, structural loads, glass dimensions, support conditions and the specific requirements of the building envelope.

LandVac Titanium Vacuum Glass combines a very low-pressure vacuum cavity with flexible titanium edge sealing and, where required, a laminated safety structure, providing an approach to skylight design that integrates thermal insulation, safety and slim construction.
