From October 2007, production of glass containers in Uruguay will resume thanks to Envidrio, located at Polo Tecnolgico del Cerro, in Montevideo. The majority of the 100-strong workforce are ex-employees of Cristaleras del Uruguay. The Venezuelan government has contributed USD 3.9 million to the USD 7.2 million total cost of the project. Most of the investment has gone into building the plant and the new furnace. An application for the rest of the capital from Economic and Social Development Bank Bandes Uruguay is pending approval. During the first year of operation, Envidrio expects turnover of USD 3 million from the sale of containers of up to 3 liters which it forecasts will satisfy 40% of the local market. In its third year the company will begin exports. The furnace has a daily capacity of 60 tonnes, or 18,000 tonnes a year.
