5 March 1998: According to the Jordanian press, sources at United Glass Industries (UGI) have said the market share of glass containers dropped from 28% in 1995 to 15% in 1997, while demand for plastic containers increased from 4% in 1995 to 30% in 1997 due to a 50% decline in prices. Reports say competition from glass containers produced in plants based in the Gulf, Egypt and Turkey and a decline in the price of containers made from cardboard, aluminum and plastic (polyethyl tetra phthalate), damaged UGI. According to sources in UGI, the needs of the Palestinian market were not satisfied while the UN embargo imposed on Iraq remained in place.
