In July, soda ash exports rose by 4.4% or 1,318 tons compared with July 2001, to 31,075 tons, while earnings from soda ash exports fell by 1.1% or US$ 0.034 million to US$ 3.024 million, as disclosed by the State Statistics Committee. In July, Italy was the major buyer of Ukrainian soda ash. It imported 27.2% of the total volume of soda ash exported from Ukraine. In the same period, large quantities of soda ash were imported by Venezuela (19.7%), and Mexico (16.3%). Soda ash exports in July rose by 91.2% compared with June. In January-July, exports of soda ash fell by 3.2% compared with the corresponding period of 2001, to 185,741 tons for US$ 18.595 million (191,882 tons for US$ 20.167 million in January-June of 2001). As reported earlier, in June, soda ash exports fell by 7.1% or 1,245 tons compared with June 2001, to 16,249 tons. In 2001, soda ash exports rose by 29.3% compared to 2000, to 335,954 tons for US$ 34.844 million (259,816 tons for US$ 27.185 million in 2000). In July, soda ash production fell by 22% compared to July 2001, to 47,500 tons. The Crimean soda plant (Krasnoperekopsk, Crimea) is the only producer of the exported soda (A brand).
