Stained and painted glass windows depicting biblical images are at the spiritual heart of churches and chapels across Wales. Now more than 5,000 stained-glass windows from over 350 locations have been assembled in an online archive. The internet catalogue also contains descriptions and information about the artists and manufacturers. The searchable catalogue has been created by the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (CAWCS) and Swansea Metropolitan University. It will be launched at the Welsh School of Architectural Glass at Swansea Metropolitan University on 9 June 2011. A spokesperson for CAWCS said that the new online catalogue will provide an overview of the glass medium in Wales, including examples from the 14th century to the present day. They noted that stained glass windows are present in nearly every community across Wales, mainly in churches and chapels. But while treasured by local congregations, often little is known about the artists and firms that produced the windows, the techniques that they used, and the subjects that they depict.
