Moldova“s rebel region of Transdniestria again offered for sale its indebted glass packaging producer Tirsteklo on 14 November 2006, leaving the price unchanged at USD 552,250 (EUR 431,300). The region“s economy ministry said in a statement that the previous attempt to sell the company attracted no bidders. The next auction will be called on 5 December 2006, it added. Transdniestria is also asking for USD 1.74 million in investments in Tirsteklo by 2011. The company has an outstanding debt of USD 402,600. The deadline for placing bids is 4 December 2006 the ministry said. Transdniestria said earlier it planned to earn USD 106.2 million from privatisations in 2005 and 2006, despite numerous warnings from the Moldovan authorities that the sales are illegal without their approval. Transdniestria is located on the left bank of the Dniestr river in eastern Moldova. It broke away from Moldova in 1990 as its largely Slavic, pro-Russian population feared that the country“s Romanian-speaking majority would unite the country with neighbouring Romania.
