Japan“s Tosoh Corp. will double its annual production capacity for zirconia powder to 1,300 metric tons by autumn through a 4 billion yen expansion of its Nanyo plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture, the chemical company said Wednesday. Zirconia powder“s strength and ability to minimize the weakening of optical signals make it a key component of optical fiber connectors. It is also used to make electronic parts used in cellular phones and to produce artificial hip joints and industrial equipment parts. Though Tosoh holds 60% of the global market, it has decided to boost capacity on expectations of a continued climb in demand. Construction at the plant will begin in the spring.
