The Japanese companies, Toshiba and Matsushita have set up a joint venture to manufacture low temperature polysilicon LCD panels in Singapore. The new company will be 67% owned by Toshiba and the rest by Matsushita. Total investment is expected to top US$1 billion with production expected to start in July 2002. Production capacity will be 55,000 730mm x 920mm glass substrates per month by fiscal year 2003. The plant will employ 750 people. “The joint venture allows us to fuse advanced technology from both partners,” said Tadashi Okamura, president and CEO of Toshiba. “Polysilicon LCD panels will be critical key devices for a wide range of digital network appliances such as video mobile phones, PDAs and advanced TVs,” said Kunio Nakamura, president of Matsushita.
