Tata Chemicals Ltd. is exploring new avenues of growth in the backdrop of uncertain policies of the Government of India on fertilisers. Urea has continued to be under the Retention Pricing Scheme of the Government affecting the growth of the Indian fertiliser industry. Other factors such as over-capacity in soda ash market and rise in competition in the branded salt market have additionally induced TCL to look out for other areas of growth. The company has, however, not yet stated its new channels of growth. For now, TCL would be focussing on consolidating its existing businesses. TCL had posted a net profit of INR 126.820,000,000 in 2001-2002, compared to INR 164.950,000,000 in 2000-2001. It had recorded a product-wise decline in performance relating to soda, vacuum salt and urea.
