6 May 1999: The Australian company Tanganyika Gold NL has purchased a reconnaissance licence for the Lake Natron soda ash project in Tanzania, which had previously been under the control of National Chemical Industry. It will receive payments of A$ 1 million if the project reaches production, a recent press report stated. About 1 million tonnes/year of sodium carbonate flows into Lake Natron each year. A feasibility study is scheduled for completion by the end of 2000. Tanganyika“s initial target is to produce 350,000-500,000 tonnes/year of soda ash, which will mainly be sold in East Asia.
