Construction began at the end of September 2009 on Taiwan Glass Group“s USD 1.14 billion soda ash project in Jiangsu Province, eastern China. The group reportedly aims to ensure supplies of soda ash, a main raw material for glass, by exploiting rich resources in Huai“an, where the project is located. The first phase of the project, which will have a production capacity of 1 million tonnes of soda ash, and 1 million tonnes of ammonium chloride with an investment of CNY 600 million (USD 87.8 million), is scheduled to start production in 2011, with annual business income of CNY 3 billion. Taiwan Glass group, founded in 1964, has set up plants in Kunshan city in Jiangsu, Qingdao in Shandong Province and Chengdu in Sichuan Province, and produced almost 2.7 million tonnes of glass in 2008.
