Further to a report in GlassOnline Weekly World News in April this year, the “Smart Windows”, put into production by Sylvia and Dr. Gavin Tulloch, joint Managing Directors of Sustainable Technologies Australia Ltd., were displayed for the first time in Sydney on 4 September. These windows, which constitute the world“s most advanced solar energy building product, will be put on show in Sydney“s Olympic buildings during the 2000 Games. “Smart Windows” provide a 30% reduction in energy consumption in houses and buildings. They consist of laminated glass which can be switched electronically from clear to any shade of blue to reduce glare and to lower energy required for air conditioning. The windows reportedly help to reduce the energy required for heating, cooling and lighting by up to 30%. In the clear state, the “Smart Window” is designed to be a very high performing low-energy window. In the darkened blue state, the window is claimed to reduce both heat and glare better than any other form of glazing used in the world today.
