The eyewear operation Sunglass Hut International of the US recently reported that sales for the four weeks ended 31 May 1997 were US$ 52.5 million, an increase of 8% compared to the US$ 48.7 million reported for the same period last year. Comparable store sales for the four-week period decreased 5%. Year-to-date sales for the seventeen weeks ended 31 May 1997 increased 11.3% to US$ 190.8 million. This compares to sales of US$ 171.5 million for the same period in 1996. Year-to-date comparable store sales decreased 3.8%. Mr. James N. Hauslein, Chairman and acting CEO of the company, said that although he is disappointed that May store sales results were slow, he is encouraged by the sell-through of new products in recent periods, as well as the significant progress Sunglass Hut has made in reducing and rebalancing its inventory. He also said that the initiatives set by the company for 1997 should positively impact its business, including expanded marketing activities in conjunction with its vendor partners, the recent mailing of approximately 4 million catalogues, and a heightened emphasis on in-store presentation and the high levels of customer service offered by its sales associates.
