7 January 1999: On its debut at the 1999 International Spring Fair in Birmingham, UK (7-11 February 1999), Sunderland Glassworks will be unveiling its inaugural range of coloured glass holloware and giftware, as well as a designer collection of paperweights. All the new ranges are being produced using the traditional stained glass hand manufacturing techniques, and will be displayed on a custom-made stand, which will be shared with Royal Brierley Crystal. The new Sunderland Glass holloware range includes three contemporary collections, each of which uses a wide range of glassmaking techniques. The collections cover a spectrum of colours including sapphire, violet, ruby and turquoise. For the top end of the market, Sunderland is launching the Philip Chaplain Designer Collection of coloured glass paperweights. An experienced and creative paperweight designer, Philip was previously with Caithness Glass before becoming head designer at Sunderland Glassworks. The new collection he has designed for Sunderland will include 36 designs of paperweights, twelve of which will be exclusive limited editions. Sunderland will also be showing a new range of coloured glass pressed giftware including candlesticks, nightlights and clocks.
