11 February 1999: Sumita Optical Glass of Japan has developed a special type of glass which can store light. The company reported that when a light beam is irradiated onto the glass, the light energy is stored and released gradually as protracted luminescence. The new material is an oxide glass containing a small quantity of the rare earth ion, terbium, and can be produced in the same manner as ordinary optical glass without requiring any special process. It features excellent optical uniformity in addition to easy machining and shaping. Gist reference 24076P.
