Saint Gobain Sekurit, which makes autoglass products in Avils, northern Spain, has guaranteed the continuation of temporary contracts until the end of 2008. However, the company will suspend operation of one of its manufacturing lines during the first week of November. The suspension is a response to the Spanish and European global crisis, company sources said when the move was proposed in early October 2008. The group has denied a request by unions to relocate employees to jobs of a similar level and offer them training. In addition, it has also announced a reduction of 20 jobs in the research and development center. Unions said they will try to get the firm to continue its commitment to research as they fear that the center is at risk of closure. The Saint-Gobain plant in Avils suffered a blaze in its float glass furnace on 12 March 2008. After extensive repairs the furnace returned to operation in September.
